I don't know what I was expecting, but it seemed like a necessary pilgrimage to visit the World Trade Center site. So on my last morning in New York, before I flew home to Australia, I got the subway down to the site. In some ways, it's just a construction site, with the usual collection of big trucks, hard hats, flood lights and 'Do not enter' signs. In other ways, it is quite moving; not so much for what one sees, but for the unknowns that the site demands one considers.
People at the WTC site. There were several hundred visitors at the site when I arrived at 9am on a very cold morning. On the left of the photo is the fence surrounding the site, which is largely covered by official information posters.
People at the WTC site. The large black boards above the fence list the names of those killed on 11 September 2001. The poster the people are looking at is one of a series describing the history of the area, the design and construction of the World Trade Centre, and some information about their destruction.

Several buildings adjacent to the WTC site are still covered, wholly or partly, in protective coverings.
