Diamond ring effect at third contact

Diamond Ring effect when the sun starts to emerge from behind the moon. Total eclipse of the sun, 21 July 2001, photographed at Chisamba, north of Lusaka in Zambia. The photos on this page are just as they came out of the camera, except this one, which has been cropped.

Black-backed jackal

Black-backed jackal, on the road from Okaukuejo to Okondeka on my first full day in Etosha National Park, Namibia.

Etosha National Park is a very large park with a wonderful variety of wildlife. Click here for more photos of Etosha.

A double rainbow visible in the spray at Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia. With the light in just the right place, the spray from the falls creates a double rainbow.

A zebra near Okerfontein waterhole, Etosha National Park, northern Namibia.

There are thousands of zebra at Etosha. After several days of seeing zebra every day, I became fascinated by the unique patterns of their stripes, and the ways that family groups interacted.

An inquisitive giraffe at Chudop waterhole, Etosha National Park, northern Namibia.

Etosha National Park is one of the most wondrous places I have ever visited. As I took this photo, there were over 30 giraffe around a waterhole. And I was the only person there to see them.

Boat at sunset at Grand Baie, Mauritius

Boat at sunset, Grand Baie, Mauritius

Mauritius is a truly beautiful place. The blues and greens of the ocean change as the light moves during the day. The pace is slow, the people are beautiful, the food is excellent.

Cheetah at Okonjima, Namibia

Isn't it cute. But it's a cheetah, the fastest animal on earth. I saw this one at Okonjima, Namibia

Okonjima is a luxury lodge several hours north of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. It is the home of Africat, a foundation that takes care of deserted and injured cats: leopards, cheetah, lions and caracal (lynx).

View from Mountain Inn, Mbabane, Swaziland

View from Mountain Inn, Mbabane, Swaziland.

Mbabane is the capital of Swaziland, a small land-locked country between South Africa and Mozambique. The Mountain Inn faces away from the city towards the Ezulwini Valley. This was the view from my hotel room.

Herb Koenig, eclipse-watcher from San Diego

Herb Koenig, eclipse-watcher from San Diego. The eclipse of 2001 was his 18th total solar eclipse.

I met Herb on a farm outside Chisamba in Zambia. A couple of hundred people had met on the farm to view the total eclipse of the sun of 21 June 2001.
